Paid: Yes. This is limited to hours spent in connection with the five meetings (and preparation for the meetings). Gry is taking these fees as she does not provide free services to a company. Transport and accommodation for the in person meetings are also covered by Bayer.
Notes: To accept the role was considered very carefully over a longer period of time. In the end, the primary reason to join was to gain inside knowledge and understanding of the power dynamics that shape global responses and use of emerging technologies in the context of health and healthcare. The decision was based on the experience of the Covid19 pandemic global power dynamics.
The role was accepted based on conditions that ensure complete expert independence and the power to be openly critical. Gry contributes as an independent scholar, not in any of her other roles. Nothing in the contract prevents her from publishing or publicly discussing topics that come up in consultation with Bayer, so long as confidential information is not revealed.
The scope of the bio ethics council is in the contract described to:
“… • challenge Bayer to ensure human bioethics is an integral part of the R&D contributions
• challenge Bayer’s policies in respect to human bioethics and provides input on strategic shifts
• evaluate Bayer’s progress towards the implementation of its bioethics strategies and goals
• consult on main drivers behind contemporary bioethics topics (i.e. technological advancement and social change)…“
